According to WHO’s (World Health Organization) definition, Mental Health may be defined as, “A state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

Mental Health is the term used to describe how we as individuals cope or struggle with our day to day lives, our surroundings and how it’s affects the people around us. Over the years if any of these behaviors or our emotional and physical attributes change drastically and irrationally, we may be experiencing mental health problems.

It is a fact that almost 20% of our world’s population mainly adolescents have mental disorders. This may be caused by a number of reasons some of which may include the leading causes which are:

  • Through substance use and alcohol. This heightens disability in the thought processes as well as bodily functions like lack of sleep, stress, anxiety, starvation, and emotional outbursts.
  • There are around 800,000 people who commit suicide each year due to mental disorders, causes may vary but as facts state, it is due to low income or higher demand/expectations from people.
  • War veterans and people affected by war.
  • Lack of health clinics or proper treatment of mentally ill patients leads to the further advancement of the illness, creating isolation, rejection, and abuse or labeled as incurable.

There are so many warning signs to know if someone around you is living with mental illnesses. Some of the warning signs may be; over or under sleeping and eating, lethargic, helplessness, smoking and drinking excessively, random emotional outbursts, pains, and aches that have no explanation, hearing voices, denial of the life around them and pushing friends and family away.

All the stress in the world creates helplessness among people, this shifts their attitude towards life and towards themselves. They feel like they don’t belong or have nothing to look forward to anymore. It affects their eating habits either by overeating or under eating (starvation).

But does one’s mental health affect others? It does. It adds stress to the rest of the family and depresses them by having to adhere to the patient’s every need. It could ruin the relationship between couples and if children are involved, it creates a sense of fear in them.

Mental Illnesses are affecting an individual’s mental health on a daily. Some can be treated, but it is important for us to be there and be aware of the changes our friends and family are experiencing and get them the proper care they need.
